Selangor should start reducing water consumption before it is too late, says an MP.

“The Federal Government believes that Selangor in particular, will [sic] be facing water crisis by 2015,” said Charles Santiago, a water activist who is also a Member of Parliament for Klang, last Friday.

Tricia Yeoh, the Research Officer to Selangor’s Chief Minister, offered her view.

“Our current water supply based on the treatment plants that we have are actually still far and above beyond what we are consuming,” said Tricia on Monday.

However, Tricia added, the high Non-Revenue Water (NRW) rate of above 30% requires more water to be produced to cover up for the 30% loss of water.

According to Charles, the Selangor government believes that if Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SYABAS) is able to reduce the NRW, it can solve the problem of water shortage.

However, SYABAS did not manage to reduce the NRW to below 30%, said Trisha.

Charles suggested that the issue of water shortage should be dealt with immediately by conserving water.

He added, “Because of climate change, you have no idea when the [water] crisis will confront you.”

“We do not have to wait for worse things to happen in the climate before we start [conserving water],’ said Charles.
